Why thick-layer cement-based glues?

Why thick-layer cement-based glues?

In the last Fixcer Informa we revised the EN 12.004 standard for bonding adhesives.

The key elements have been seen in regulations, uses and functions.

At this point, it is important to emphasise that this standard classifies exclusively all thin-layer applications, in other words, all applications made with a notched trowel, and therefore the resulting thickness of the cement adhesive is between 0 and 10 mm.

However, on the actual construction site, there is also another type of tile installation that is well known in the world of construction: thick-layer tile installation.

This type of placement is not covered by the relevant regulations, so is it still feasible?

Beyond all regulations, we are fortunately always left with the experience and know-how of construction professionals. This experience is regularly reflected in various technical compendiums that appear on the market to illustrate correct working procedures on the construction site.

One of the latest compendiums to appear is the Spanish standard UNE 138002 “General rules for the installation of ceramic tiles with bonding materials.”

From the text approved by the technical committee CTN-UNE 138 Ceramic Tiles, the secretariat of which is held by ASCER, our attention is drawn to section 6.4 relating to the “Conditions of presentation of the fixing surface”, which specifies the following: “Special adhesives are available on the market for application in thicknesses of up to 20mm, which allow direct application.

Indeed, this type of cement-based adhesive is called “THICK LAYER”.

Following this premise, at Fixcer we offer you solutions that ADD the advantages of adhesive cement bonding: adhesion, and the advantages of the thick layer:  the possibility of positioning and levelling the surface at the same time.

The following thick layer adhesive is available: FIXAGRES FLEX CAPA GRUESA: installation of stoneware and porcelain stoneware in a thick layer for interiors and exteriors.
