{"id":7760,"date":"2024-04-18T18:16:31","date_gmt":"2024-04-18T16:16:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fixcer.com\/how-is-the-adhesion-of-a-cement-based-glue-measured\/"},"modified":"2024-08-02T15:43:48","modified_gmt":"2024-08-02T13:43:48","slug":"how-is-the-adhesion-of-a-cement-based-glue-measured","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fixcer.com\/en\/how-is-the-adhesion-of-a-cement-based-glue-measured\/","title":{"rendered":"How is the adhesion of a cement-based glue measured?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column]<\/p>\n<h2><b>HOW IS THE ADHESION OF A CEMENT-BASED GLUE MEASURED?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technically, cement-based glues are also called cement-based adhesives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The adhesion of an adhesive is defined as the <strong>tensile strength<\/strong> of that cement under the action of a continuous and direct force.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adhesion is not a single value, but will depend on the test conditions to which the tiles under study have been subjected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The test standard <strong>EN 1348<\/strong> defines four different test conditions:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0a.- <strong>initial<\/strong> adhesion<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0b.- adhesion after <strong>immersion in water<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0c.- adhesion after <strong>heat ageing<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0d.- adhesion after <strong>freeze-thaw<\/strong> cycles<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on the application, one of the above four adhesions will be more or less relevant: are we building a kitchen, a swimming pool, a fa\u00e7ade, &#8230;?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, the adhesion value is expressed in <strong>N\/mm2<\/strong>. For example:\u00a0 an adhesion of 0.5 N\/mm2 is equivalent to 5 kg\/cm2 in the old unit of measurement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this point, we can easily calculate the <strong>gripping force<\/strong> to which a 100 x 100 mm tile glued with an adhesive with an initial adhesion of 0.5 N\/mm2 will be subjected:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0F = 0.5 N\/mm2 x 100 mm.\u00a0 x 100 mm.\u00a0 = 5,000 N (= 500 Kg.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In plain English:\u00a0 we would have to exert a force of 500 kg to be able to pull a single 10\u00d710 cm piece off its surface, provided that the surface did not give way beforehand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we can see, it is always assumed that the contact between the cement and the back of the tile is 100%. Any adhesion value expressed in N\/mm2 assumes full contact.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So <strong>why do we have to lay all ceramic pieces in a solid form?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If we stick to common sense, we can say that &#8220;tile adhesive that does not touch the tile is certainly not gripping it&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this reason, it is generally recommended that the contact between cement-based glue and ceramic tile should be at least 70%, although in special installations such as swimming pools or fa\u00e7ades this percentage should be increased to 100%.
